Why are Maternity Clothes are so ugly?

When I was pregnant with my first child, I was determined not to buy actual maternity clothes during my pregnancy because in my brain ...maternity clothes had a connotation that they were ugly. When I tried shopping for maternity clothes, I confirmed that they were straight up ugly. Even the ones that were expensive! Maternity clothing makers weren't using fabrics that were comfortable or cutting the fabric in a way that actually flattered a women's pregnancy bump.

I ended up borrowing a lot of hand me down maternity clothes from my sister in law to hold me over but I lucked out since I was pregnant during the pandemic and didn't really have many social events or need to go into the office for work. Additionally, my sister in law gave me clothes she were when she was pregnant that weren't maternity clothes. Those ended up being my favorite pieces!

I ended up maternity clothes shopping only only to find a cute outfit to wear for my baby shower and decided to wear things from Zara and All Saints that weren't maternity and squeezed into those dresses. I realized that my preference really was dresses during pregnancy because of the ease of slipping them on and they felt so comfortable. However, finding the right dress was always hit or miss because some dresses when worn with a growing bump would look like a parachute. Yikes.

For my second pregnancy it was a very different story. The pandemic was ending, I had to start going back into the office and there were so many more social events happening. This is where I really felt the pain of the lack of options for women that were pregnant.

I believe the reason maternity clothes are ugly is 3 fold:

1. the fabric that is usually selected for maternity clothes aren't comfortable or the same quality as regular clothes you buy

2. the designs lean heavily in having extra fabric in the belly area for a bump or super stretchy fabric that is loose which makes you feel like you are wearing a bag

3. maternity clothes sometimes feel like they were designs and sewn by people that have never experienced pregnancy

This is why I started LO+JAYNE! I want to revolutionize the way maternity wear is designed and I want it to be innovative. I always see clothes saying it will be nursing friendly but let's be real...once I am not pregnant I am eager to wear my regular styled clothing only to realize no one designed for nursing and pumping too! I'm on a mission to change that. Follow up for maternity fashion tips and style guides. We are here to be your personal stylist and share ideas and trends while you are pregnant and going through your postpartum journey. Love ya mama <3
